Surgical Recovery Technician (Anchorage based)

Life Alaska is looking for on-call surgical technicians to join our team!  This is a great opportunity to work with a group of dedicated professionals focused on saving and healing lives through organ and tissue donation. 

JOB SUMMARY

Surgical Technicians learn and perform all activities related to the surgical recovery of donated tissue from generous donors. This includes, but is not limited to recovery site preparation, surgical assisting, surgical recovery, and safe preservation of donated tissues.  This is per diem positon (compensation per case) with on-call responsibilities and also requires additional training and compliance beyond case activity.  To be successful in this position you must be willing and able to offer significant flexibility in your schedule where case activity may occur any hour of the day or night. 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Take call to provide necessary needs of a recovery team.
  • Must learn and utilize proper sterile technique during tissue cases.
  • Maintain and thoroughly understand OSHA standards and regulations.
  • Monitor instrument care of all instruments.
  • Participate in special projects as needed.
  • Learn and perform duties of back table during surgical recovery (surgical assist).
  • Learn and perform duties to assist OR staff in a sterile environment. 
  • Learn and perform surgical recovery of donated tissue. 
  • Has addition responsibilities including but not limited to quality assurance and attendance at meetings and technical training.

 

BASIC EDUCATION AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Must have knowledge of human anatomy.

 

EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in tissue recovery preferred.
  • Should have clinical work experience in the medical field.
  • Sterile technique preferred.

 

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to work outside of normal business hours (nights, weekends, holidays, and double shifts).
  • Must be available to take 16-24 hour on-call, on a monthly call schedule.
  • Must provide proof of current vaccinations for the Hepatitis B series, MMR, and Varicella as well as a current TB test.  If completed, provide proof of flu vaccine for the current flu season (Nov. 1-April 1).
  • Must have a valid Alaska driver’s license
  • Must have insurance that meets the minimum Alaska requirements and be accepted for coverage on Life Alaska’s auto insurance policy. 

 

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Must have strong communication, inter-personal and organizational skills.
  • Requires the ability to work in group situations and with the general public.
  • OSHA: Tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues. Knowledge and understanding of universal precautions including blood borne pathogens and personal protective equipment, hazard communication.
  • Must be able to stand for more than eight hours per day.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license to travel to recovery locations.
  • Working environment will consist of hospital, morgue, operating room and office environments.
